Betula nigra – River Birch
A beautiful, vigorous, medium sized tree, conical habit when young and spreading with age. The striking bark varies from cream to pink, grey and brown, and on young trees it peels conspicuously in numerous thin, shaggy layers. Older trees have ridged, grey brown bark. The sharply toothed, blue green leaves turn yellow in autumn and pendulous male catkins open in the spring.
Soil: Acid, alkaline or neutral. Grows well on wet ground.
Aspect: Full sun or part shade.
Suitable Locations: Cottage/informal gardens, damp sites.
Other: Can tolerate heat extremely well.
