Carpinus betulus – Hornbeam
A large deciduous tree with a broadly conical to rounded habit with a smooth, grey fluted trunk and sharply toothed, conspicuously veined leaves, turning yellow in autumn. Separate male and female catkins are borne on the same tree in spring: the males yellow and drooping; the females green and forming attractive green fruit clusters, later turning yellow brown in colour.
Soil: Moist, well drained soil. Acid, alkaline or neutral.
Aspect: Full sun or part shade.
Suitable Locations: Woodland setting
