Castanea sativa – Sweet Chestnut
A fast growing, large deciduous tree with smooth grey bark when young. The bark becomes brown and spirally furrowed with age. The bold, glossy dark green leaves are edged with numerous bristle tipped teeth. Masses of creamy, fragrant catkins appear in summer, followed by very spiny fruits containing large brown and edible seeds.
Soil: Dry, acid or neutral. Loam or sand.
Aspect: Full sun.
Suitable Locations: Avenues, parklands.
Other: Drought resistant, moderately lime tolerant.
