Corylus avellana – Hazel
A small deciduous tree with broad, roughly, hairy leaves. The pendulous, pale yellow, male catkins are a familiar sight in late winter and early spring, while the tiny red, female flowers give rise to edible hazelnuts.
Soil: Alkaline or neutral. Loam, chalk or sand.
Aspect: Full sun or part shade.
