Paulownia tomentosa – Empress Tree/Foxglove Tree
A vigorous, medium to large deciduous tree which bears bold, angled dark green leaves, up to 30cm long. The large fox-glove like, pale purple flowers marked with yellow on the insides are produced in autumn, but do not open in large, upright clusters until spring.
Soil: Grows in moist, humus rich fertile soil.
Aspect: Full sun, but sheltered.
Suitable Locations: Parklands, city/urban, gardens.
Other: Needs to be protected from frosts. Very tolerant of atmospheric pollution, coppicing and pollarding.
