Populus tremula – Aspen
A large spreading, deciduous tree with long-stalked, grey-green leaves edged with small rounded teeth. The foliage is bronze when young and turns yellow in the autumn. The flattened leaf stalks cause the leaves to flutter in the wind. Male plants have pendulous, red catkins in early spring before the leaves emerge.
Soil: Moist, well drained, humus rich fertile soil.
Aspect: Full sun. Exposed or sheltered.
Suitable Locations: Verges, parklands, woodland, cold and exposed sites.
