A fast growing, medium sized deciduous tree with a spreading habit and dark, matt-green, taper pointed and finely toothed leaves. Small, fragrant white flowers open in slender, upright, spreading or drooping spikes in mid to late spring, followed by glossy black fruits.

Soil: Most fertile soils. It prefers damp soil, but will grow well even in poor soils.

Aspect: Full sun. Sheltered or exposed.

Suitable Locations: Parks, gardens and woodlands. Will tolerate the stresses of urban environments.
