A large evergreen tree with a dense, rounded habit. The leathery, taper pointed leaves are un-toothed, or nearly so on mature plants, but on younger leaves and shoots from the base of old trees can be spiny edged. Emerging grey and hairy, the leaves become glossy and dark green on their upper surfaces. The yellow male catkins are conspicuous as the leaves emerge in early summer, followed by acorns.

Soil: Moist, but well drained soils.

Aspect: Full sun, but it can tolerate partial shade.

Suitable Locations: Parks, coastal areas, windy sites. It is suitable for topiary and raised screening.

Other: Drought tolerant, air pollution tolerant, wind resistant.
