Quercus petraea – Sessile Oak
A large deciduous tree forming a broad, rounded crown with leathery, dark green lobed leaves, up to 15cm long, turning orange-brown in autumn. Inconspicuous yellowish flowers in catkins appear when the new leaves emerge, followed by acorns. Leaves on stalks. Acorns stalk-less.
Soil: Humus rich, moist, clay or sandy loam soils.
Aspect: Full sun or part shade.
Suitable Locations: Woodlands, parks and coastal areas.
Other: A good choice for wildlife, as it hosts a number of species.
